was made popular in England in the early
nineteenth century by the Duchess of Bedford
after she reportedly suffered from “a sinking feeling”
later in the afternoon.
She initially took tea with a light snack in her rooms
and then began sending out formal invitations
asking guests to join her for “tea and walking in the
fields,” serving them small cakes, sandwiches, a
selection of sweets and of course, tea.
